5th Grade Assignments
Reading/Language Arts- Ms. Easter
During the second nine weeks of the 2018/2019 school year, the fifth grade students will: learn to identify and accurately use figurative language; such as, similes, metaphors and idioms, determine the main idea of a text and be able to explain how it is supported by key details. We will begin to compare and contrast stories, settings, characters and events in a story. We will also continue to build needed grammar skills; such as, identifying subject, predicates, and direct objects. In addition, students will continue to develop his or her writing skills.
Please, encourage your child to read daily. Please, check your student’s planner daily for assignments and notes from his or her teachers.
Math- Mrs. Bryson
During the second nine weeks we will complete our study of the base ten standards and begin studying fractions at great lengths. We will be adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. Fractions will have like and unlike denominators. After that, we will be writing and solving expressions and equations using the order of operations.
You can help you student this month by looking for and discussing fractions in everyday situations. And, as always, you can help them practice their basic multiplication facts.
Social Studies- Mrs. Ostrowski
For the second nine week of school the students will continue to learn about the Civil War. The students will continue to explain the various causes and consequences of the events in Tennessee as well as their contributions. The students will research the significant outcomes of the major battles, military and civil leaders. The students will understand the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War, and explain the successes and failures of Reconstruction.
Parents may help by:
1. Reading over students notes and study guides with your student.
2. Checking for assignments.
3. Looking at major battles during the Civil War such as; First Battle of Bull Run, Battle at Gettysburg, Battle at Chickamauga, etc.
Science- Mrs. Spradlin
During the second nine weeks of the 2018/2019 school year, the fifth grade students will be completing unit 3 about “Matter”, learning about “Forces and Motion” in unit 4, and beginning unit 5 about “Organisms and Their Traits”.
Your student has many ways they can study at home. They can pull up their Science book and the interactive digital lessons on Think Central. I have also made them vocabulary reviews on Quizlet, and they can sign into IXL to practice on skills. Quizlet and IXL also works as an app. The students have their passwords in their school planners. You can also look up your students assignments under Academics, then 5th grade assignments on the Vonore Middle School website https://vms.monroe.k12.tn.us/
