VMS Band's first ever performance on Thursday, May 10, drew rave reviews from all those who attended. Most of the students had been playing for less than one year under the direction of Lynn Phelps, but the concert seemed like a group of seasoned performers!
The band performed a medley of folk songs, as well as four other pieces. Ten small groups of students performed as ensembles. The showstopper was their rendition of the Star Wars Main theme, which brought audience members to their feet in a standing ovation.
Fifty-five students performed in the concert. The instruments played were flutes, clarinets, alto saxophones, baritones, tuba, trumpets, trombones, and percussion.
This is the first year that VMS has ever offered our students the opportunity to learn an instrument and join the band. The program was started by Lynn Phelps, who had retired to the area after a successful career as a teacher and band director in Michigan. She learned that VMS did not have a band program and stepped in to create one. We are so lucky to have such a force of nature on our side!
